Safari, Adium, Skype, Updater, iTunes, Mail: Wont work after latests OS X update
Today the OS X updater asked me if i want to install the latest updates for OS X. Of course i want to. It is important to stay up to date. On the edge. Latest stuff. Now i know better:
After the update tons of applications failed to start!
I can live without iTunes for a day or two… but Skype, Safari, Adium, Mail: i need those. Please give them back to me!
In the log files i found this message “Symbol not found: __ZN3KJS11Interpreter4markEv” (and similar). To my suprise Firefox still worked and i found out that the problem was caused by udates installed in wrong order (first Security Update and then Safari). So the solution was:
- Download Safari Update (Safari31UpdLeo.dmg)
- Extract the dmg file (i did this in finder)
- Install the pkg file
Installation of the package file did not work in finder. So i had to do following in a console
sudo -s
installer -pkg /User/foo/Safari31UpdLeo.pkg -target “/Volumes/Macontosh HD”
shutdown -h now
And my OS X is back. I have to say that this is the first time in years that an OS X update caused troubles for me… but still: i don’t see how an average computer user could solve this problem!

Hi there,
After numerous searches on the net, I finally bounced on your story here above which describes EXACTLY the same problem that I’m experiencing right now! Mail, Itunes, Adium, Safari etc. all don’t work anymore after an update from OSX..unbelievable!
If I click on the icon in the dock, it bounces one time and then nothing happens anymore. However since I’m rather a “Newbie” in the Mac-world, I would like to ask you a bit more explanation about the procedure that you are describing here above. How do I start up this “console”? Also in my latest downloaded dmg-file from Safari, there are two pkg-files: Safari311updPPC.pkg and Safari311upduniv.pkg? Ofcourse neither one of them install by using Finder…

Hi Yves
With the console we were referring to the Terminal application which you find in /Applications/Utilities. Which pkg you should install depends on the architecture of your machine which you can check in the ‘About This Mac’ menu item in the Apple menu. If you’ve got a g4 or g5 processor the ‘Safari311updPPC.pkg’ would be the right one. If you have an Intel Mac you should install the ‘Safari311upduniv.pkg’.
Let me know if that worked.

Sorry for the late reply, but I just wanted to thank you for your help! I struggled a little bit with the correct input into the console, but in the end it worked! All my app’s are up and running again. So even an robust and “perfect” system as OS X can have his weaker moments, ’cause I would have expected these problems only with “Mickeysoft” from Mr Gates ;-)

olá!
Estou com o mesmo problema. Baixar a versão “Safari31UpdTiger.dmg”, extraí o arquivo “Safari312UpdPPC.pkg” e tentei instalar e não deu certo.
O meu mac é um G3 600
isis:~/Desktop root# installer -pkg /Users/bruna/Desktop/Safari312UpdPPC.pkg -target “/Volumes/Computador”
installer: Package name is Safari
installer: Installing onto volume mounted at /.
installer: The install failed.
isis:~/Desktop root#
